Port Master

 

The Role

As Port Master you will ensure that HPUK complies with the Port Marine Safety Code and the Ports Good Governance Guidance as a Competent and Statutory Harbour Authority both at Harwich and Felixstowe. You will be representing HPUKs interests in liaisons with Maritime Agencies, ship operators and other stakeholders to give advice and guidance to HPUK management on all related maritime related issues affecting Felixstowe, Harwich and Thamesport.  Your day to day duties will involve engaging closely with Harwich Haven Authority to ensure the provision of pilotage, vessel traffic management and conservancy is conducted in a safe, efficient and effective manner.  You will effectively and efficiently lead the functional management of all maritime related operations to ensure optimum working and to ensure systems and processes are aligned with safe and efficient movement of vessels and associated activities.

 

Key Requirements

  • Ensure the operation of safe navigation of vessels in the Port of Felixstowe and Harwich International Port waters, in an equitable, efficient, safe, and secure manner.
  • Manage the marine interface to ensure efficient, safe, and timely operation of the port, including mooring and unmooring of vessels.
  • Maintain an active oversight of the various marine functions within HPUK to ensure delivery
  • Ensure compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code, and other statutory obligations including all applicable conventions, regulations, standards, and guidelines.
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate the risks to HPUK that fall within its Marine responsibilities and raise any concerns to the Board via the Designated Person.

 

Who are we looking for?

Suitable applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • You will need to be a self-motivate, experienced people manager and influencer with excellent interpersonal skills and engagement.
  • You will have a thorough knowledge and application of National and International Maritime Legislation as well as an understanding of the Port Marine Safety Code and associated Guide to Good Practice
  • You will have demonstrable experience of ensuring compliance to all policies, procedures, standard operating practices, with recommendations for action and continuous improvement.
  • You will need to have a thorough understanding of hydrographic survey practices and UKHO requirements, layout of Ports shipping channels, berths and Navigation Aids.

 

 Essential:

  • You will hold a recognised valid Certificate of Maritime competence, eg. Class I (Master Mariner), relevant Harbour Master qualification or similar.
  • MCA Level 5P Oil Spill Response.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the requirements necessary to attain a Pilot Exemption Certificate (PEC).
